Pinktober Begins

Today marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness month. You'll see a lot of fundraisers, walks, charities requesting donations (including ours!) and information about being aware of breast cancer. What you won't see much of is information about what Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer is, how only 2-5% of ALL research funds are directed toward it or that it's a death sentence. NO ONE HAS EVER DIED OF BREAST CANCER. Most people are shocked when they read that fact, but it's absolutely true. When someone dies it's because the original breast cancer has spread - most often to their liver, bones, lungs and/or brain. This is exactly what happened to my beautiful Kady. When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, she has a fighting chance at full recovery. Once the cancer metastasizes, it's incurable and the average life expectancy is 12-24 months. I think there's a sense of complacency because breast cancer is so curable now (97%) - BUT - 30% of all breast cancer patients will experience metastatic disease at some point. We are all "aware" of breast cancer. Now it's time to redirect the focus to research preventing metastasis so that 40,000 young women don't die needlessly every year.
